I understand the question and have wrestled with it myself.

I'm so proud of my son Connar, simply because he's my son. I'm pleased with him because I placed my love upon him the second He was born. But can I still be pleased in an overall sense with him, and still be saddened when he dishonors me?

Somehow God placed love upon us before the foundation of the world and yet I was still at some point His enemy (Rom 5:8). Perhaps both pleasure, and some form of displeasure can co-exist in the same person?

Also can I be saddened/angered at something Connar does without scowling at Him? I think so, even though I'm subject to my emotions in a way that God isn't.

Can God be displeased with the action but still be pleased with me? I think.

Or another way to understand it is that my union (and God's pleasure over me in Christ) doesn't change but my communion sure does when I willfully continue sinning. Its easier for me to think of it that way.

Does any of this stuff make any sense?

Thanks for the great question Randy!

Maybe some more blog posts to come.Geoffsnookhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17899329492445595648noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2711950909806746663.post-51387022592344088202013-07-30T11:19:33.057-04:002013-07-30T11:19:33.057-04:00By the way, a reason for migrating to WordPress wo...By the way, a reason for migrating to WordPress would be to get rid of the frustrating and irritating requirement that I try to read unreadable text to prove I'm not a robot in order to comment.Randy Greenwaldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03124586077401739663noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2711950909806746663.post-57478458814520445882013-07-30T11:18:17.105-04:002013-07-30T11:18:17.105-04:00Geoff, this is a wonderful image which has stuck w...Geoff, this is a wonderful image which has stuck with me – that of a father seeing his son's sin and failure and not frowning. Makes me wonder about the posture my own sons see in me. Probably the hardest thing to maintain as a parent. As for God's attitude toward me, I know his love never fails, but I can't help but believe that he is disappointed in me when I sin or fail to believe in the gospel he's made so clear to me. I fear no rejection – but for him not to be disappointed in some way seems to make him a plastic and artificial person. I have seen nothing but anger and hate in those kinds of street preachers eyes. They do nothing but tarnish the name of Christ with their actions and they are not the kind of people that Christians should want to be associated with. The Church should be the first ones in line to condemn their behavior.

Incidentally, the UK has different laws than the US and do not have the absolute right to free speech that we do in this country. There is no need to worry that anything like what happened in the UK will happen here, not when Westboro Baptist can fight an intentional infliction of emotional distress judgment all the way to the Supreme Court and win (as they should have). Don't worry, you can stand on street corners and scream that God hates gay people until you're blue in the face and nobody is going to stop you. Christians in this country are not persecuted, disagreement is not persecution. My main point wasn&#...Randy, thanks for responding. My main point wasn't to praise Tebow but simply to point out that Tebow's very vocal and public demonstration of his faith through His words is one way of expressing his faith. Barkeley's less publicly vocal way is another.

For the evangelical, Tebow is sometimes thought of as the quintessential example of boldness. My goal was to show Barkeley's model as legitimate.

Perhaps Tebowing is drawing attention to himself. But perhaps it isn't. Perhaps it is drawing attention to Christ. I guess the matter is what is in the heart.

But praying before a meal, and the waitress seeing you is also a public display of piety. I don't think I should stop doing it because people might see me. It is wrong to do it BECAUSE people will see me. So to me that is the difference.

In the end, my point is, I'm thankful for both Tebow and Barkeley. How does that NOT conflict with Jesus' exhortation to not make a display of our piety?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2711950909806746663.post-59926924243677338292013-06-13T11:44:12.836-04:002013-06-13T11:44:12.836-04:00Thanks Louis. Good work. I was conversing with another guy about this issue when it hit me, if God's choice in election consisted of him looking into the future to see who would choose him, then what purpose does his election serve? If they are going to choose God before he first chooses them then election and predestination means nothing. His act of choosing is wholly inconsequential for salvation. Yet, scripture teaches God does elect. We should interpret scripture so as to give meaning to what it says and not render any portion superfluous. jumillerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06374601654675912280noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2711950909806746663.post-5348967271499933312013-05-28T10:50:49.980-04:002013-05-28T10:50:49.980-04:00I'm even now learning from you, but I'm ma...I'm even now learning from you, but I'm making an attempt to attain my targets.
